North Berkeley

About This Project

Several distinct spaces were created with layered zones of privacy and interest. The front garden is planted with drought tolerant grasses, perennials and architecturally interesting succulents. A crushed rock driveway extends into a gated courtyard creating an ideal habitant for unusual and exotic plantings. A concrete slab dramatically separates the dry garden with its greener counterpart. An abundant vegetable garden erupts with artichokes, beets and chard. Cherry, plum and apple trees line the rectilinear lawn, creating a green canopy of shade and gentle movement, highlighted by a dramatic L shaped arbor.

The main path doubles as a horseshoe court. Around the bend water trickles from a custom built stone fountain, surrounded by shade loving hellebores, baby tears and ferns, a place of private tranquility to encourage reflection and meditation.

Selected as one of the Best Secret Gardens of the East Bay, 2007 Tour
